Note
Complex DTDs may consist of multiple .dtd, .mod, and .ent files that combine to provide the complete XML content model. You may have to create a single DTD file from these files that includes all the elements that you expect to use in the content and removes ones that you never plan to use. An example is making a subset DTD of DocBook that removes all the software and user interface elements if you are not making a software handbook.
The complexity of a deep DTD will make it very hard to select and use the correct element from the InDesign Tag menu. There are limited methods to assist with this problem: you can use the methods of creating a simpler XML described in Chapter 11 or use scripting at the SDK level to create dialogs for applying styles that are much more context-aware than the “Map Style to Tags” feature.
If you link the XML files that you place in InDesign, you can use the Links panel to open the linked XML file in an external XML editor, if you have one installed. This allows you to edit and validate the file with a better tool, and provides context-sensitive XML authoring that InDesign lacks. You will have to apply styles to edited or new content when you return to InDesign.
